Chicago is a city of bold architecture, deep history, and amazing food, all set against the backdrop of stunning Lake Michigan. Here’s why it’s worth a visit:
- Why “The Windy City”? Despite what many think, the nickname doesn’t actually come from the weather! It was first used to describe the city’s boastful politicians in the 19th century. But with those strong lake breezes, the name definitely fits.
- History: Walk through Millennium Park to see the famous Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), explore the gangster history at the Chicago History Museum, or take in the view from Willis Tower’s Skydeck.
- Culture: Catch a show at The Second City comedy club, visit world-class art at the Art Institute of Chicago, or cheer on the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

How to Get to HYROX Chicago

By Plane
✈️ Nearest Airport: Chicago has two main airports:
- O’Hare International Airport (ORD): This is the biggest and busiest airport, located about 18 miles (29 km) northwest of Navy Pier.
- Midway International Airport (MDW): This airport is closer to the city, about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Navy Pier.
🚖 Getting to the Venue:
- Taxi/Rideshare: You can easily grab a taxi or use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft at both airports. Getting to Navy Pier from O’Hare can take 30-60 minutes (or more!) depending on traffic, and from Midway, it can take 20-45 minutes. Chicago traffic can be really unpredictable, so give yourself plenty of time. Make sure you check the fare before you get in!
- From O’Hare:
- CTA Blue Line (Train): This is usually the fastest and cheapest way. Take the Blue Line train directly from O’Hare to the Clark/Lake station in downtown Chicago. From there, you can take a bus or a short taxi/rideshare to Navy Pier.
- From Midway:
- CTA Orange Line (Train): Take the Orange Line train directly from Midway to the State/Lake station in downtown Chicago. Like from Clark/Lake, you can then bus, taxi, or rideshare to Navy Pier.
By Train/CTA (Chicago Transit Authority)
🚇 CTA Train: The CTA “L” (short for “elevated”) train system is a great way to get around Chicago. The closest CTA stations to Navy Pier are:
- Clark/Lake (Blue Line)
- State/Lake (Orange Line)
From these stations, you’ll need to use a bus, taxi, or rideshare to get to Navy Pier.
By Car
🚗 Navigation: Type “Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60611, USA” into Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps.

- CTA (Chicago Transit Authority): This is the main website for all public transportation in Chicago (trains and buses). You’ll definitely need this to get around. They also have a very useful app.
💡 Travel Tips:
✔️ Plan your route: Use the CTA website or app to plan your journey and check for any delays or disruptions.
✔️ Check for delays: Always check the CTA website or app for any delays or service changes before you leave.
✔️ Ventra Card/Contactless Payment: Get a Ventra card (a reusable travel card) or use contactless payment (credit/debit card or phone) for easy travel on the CTA. It’s much cheaper than buying individual tickets every time.
✔️ Arrive early: Give yourself plenty of time (at least 1-2 hours) to travel to Navy Pier, find your way around (it’s a big place!), check in, and warm up. Chicago can be busy, so it’s always better to be early.
✔️ Stay nearby: Staying in downtown Chicago or near a CTA station will make your life much easier.
✔️ Cash & Cards: Most places in Chicago accept credit/debit cards, but it’s always good to have some US dollars ($) on hand for small things or just in case.
✔️ Chicago Weather: Chicago weather can change rapidly. Make sure to check the weather forecast before you leave and bring appropriate clothing.

If you’ve got some extra time in Chicago, here are some must-visit spots:
Skydeck Chicago: Ready for a view that’ll blow your mind? Head to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower (It used to be called the Sears Tower). If you’re brave you can step into glass boxes that stick out from the building!
This park is like a giant outdoor playground for art lovers. You’ve gotta see “The Bean” (officially Cloud Gate), a giant, shiny sculpture that reflects the whole city. Plus, there’s often free music and events.
Stroll along the Chicago River and soak up the city vibes. There are restaurants, bridges, and even spots to fish. It’s a great place to chill and watch the boats go by.
